Flights and ferries, with the times and the fares

There are exactly two ways onto this island: fly, or take a fast boat from the Mekong Delta coast. Both are straightforward and both have one detail that catches people out.

Flying

Phu Quoc International Airport, code PQC, is fifteen minutes south of Duong Dong and thirty from An Thoi. It is small, single-terminal and easy, and it is in the middle of a very large expansion: a new terminal, a lengthened runway and a second runway are being built ahead of the APEC leaders week in 2027, on more than a thousand hectares.

International routes to Phu Quoc change frequently, and charter services appear and disappear with the season. We would not trust any list of them, including this one, more than a few months old. Check current schedules directly with the airlines.

Visa, briefly and without guarantees

Vietnam has operated a visa exemption for arrivals to Phu Quoc separate from the national rules, and the national e-visa and exemption lists change regularly. Check the current position with the Vietnamese embassy or consulate for your nationality before you book. We are a tour operator, not an immigration adviser, and we will not pretend otherwise.

The ferries

Two mainland ports run fast passenger boats to Phu Quoc: Ha Tien and Rach Gia, both on the Mekong Delta coast. Three operators run them - Superdong, Phu Quoc Express and Thanh Thoi, the last of which specialises in car ferries.

Fares above were current in mid-2026 and move. Sailings run roughly between half past six in the morning and half past four in the afternoon, with more services in the dry season and cancellations in rough weather from June to September. Book online or through your hotel the day before in high season.

The detail that catches everybody

All the passenger fast boats dock at Bai Vong, on the east coast, not at An Thoi and not at Duong Dong. Bai Vong is 40 minutes from Duong Dong by road and there are taxis and Grab cars meeting each arrival. Do not book a hotel transfer to the wrong port.

Arriving, and the first hour

From the airport, a Grab car to Duong Dong is 150,000 to 250,000 dong and to Long Beach about the same. The airport taxi desk is a little more and entirely reliable. Hotel transfers are commonly quoted at 300,000 to 500,000 dong, which is a convenience premium rather than a scam.

From Bai Vong ferry terminal, a Grab or taxi to Duong Dong is 300,000 to 400,000 dong and takes about forty minutes. There are always cars meeting the boat. Agree the fare or use the meter before setting off.

  • Draw cash at the airport or in Duong Dong. Almost nothing in the villages takes cards, including the homestay and every kitchen we use.
  • Buy a local SIM or eSIM. Coverage is good across the island including on the dirt roads, and it is how we will reach you the evening before a trip.
  • Do not plan anything for the arrival afternoon beyond a swim and dinner.
  • If you land after dark and are staying north of Ong Lang, arrange the transfer in advance. Grab thins out at the northern end at night.
Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Do we need a visa for Phu Quoc?

The rules for Phu Quoc have historically differed from the rest of Vietnam and the national e-visa and exemption lists change regularly. Check with the Vietnamese embassy or consulate for your nationality before booking flights.

If you plan to travel on to the mainland afterwards, the answer may be different from an island-only trip, which is the specific point people get wrong.

Can we get to Cambodia directly from Phu Quoc?

Not by a scheduled passenger boat for foreign travellers. The practical route is a ferry to Ha Tien and then overland to the Prek Chak border crossing, which is a long day.

Sihanoukville is close on a map and awkward in practice.

How rough are the ferries?

In the dry season, usually flat to moderate. From June to September the Rach Gia crossing in particular can be unpleasant and sailings are cancelled outright in bad weather.

If you are prone to seasickness, take the Ha Tien route or fly.

Is the airport construction affecting arrivals?

The existing terminal is operating normally. What has changed is the road environment around the airport and towards An Thoi, where there is heavy construction traffic and occasional diversions.

Allow an extra twenty minutes for a departure transfer from the south of the island.
